CHAPTER twenty
MaryAnn Miller, administrative assistant to the General Manager of TalkNJ, showed up at seven AM on the dot, the same way she had for twenty-seven years come rain, shine, or snowstorms. The roads were finally clear, including her little side street, thank you very much, so she had no trouble making the short drive from her home to the station. The ten-minute commute was one of the perks of working there. Every once in a while, her husband hinted about moving, maybe somewhere south and warm, but she wasnât budging.
The morning hosts were already on the air, she knew, because she woke up to the sound of their program every morning like the loyal employee she was. She also considered herself the stationâs number one fan, and had a framed sign hanging behind her desk that proclaimed it for anyone to see.
âGood morning, Joeâ she said to the security guard with a bright smile.
âMorning, MaryAnn.â
She breezed into the alcove-like space that constituted her office. It wasnât much, but it was hers. Her jacket went on the old wooden coat rack she shared with the General Manager. She pulled out a small mirror and ran a quick brush through her hair before sliding her purse into her desk drawer. She sat on the fake leather chair and switched her snow boots for a pair of low-heeled pumps. She turned on her computer, and ready to start the day, grabbed the white and red TalkNJ mug that sat on her desk.
MaryAnn made her way down the hall to the kitchen, pausing at the studio to wave at Gary, the engineer for the morning show. He waved back with a smile. She didnât stop to talk. That would distract him during a live show. Through the big glass window she could see the hosts laughing. From the way they leaned into their microphones, it was probably a reaction to something a caller said.
She stepped into the little kitchen and set her cup in front of the coffee machine. She reached into the box on the counter for a coffee pod and came up empty.
âCanât anyone be bothered around here? How hard is it to get a new box out if you take the last one?â She huffed. Left her cup on the counter and went all the way down the hall to the supply closet. It was at the very back of the building, which was inconvenient, but it was what it was. Walking back and forth to the closet would at least help her get her daily step count in.
The key to the supply room was on a hook next to the door. There wasnât much reason to lock the door. The coffee was probably the most valuable thing in there, and since management supplied it free of charge, no one was going to upset the apple cart. She picked up a new box, carried it back to the kitchen, and put a pod into the machine. The machine hummed as it warmed up.
